“How Can I Lose Sifuna for Matiang’i” Onyonka Question that Charged the Crowd During Sifuna’s Launch

Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka drew attention during Edwin Sifuna’s political party launch after posing a question that appeared to capture the dilemma facing some opposition supporters ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during the unveiling of The Equitable Party (TEP) in Nairobi on Sunday, October 4, Onyonka compared Sifuna’s emerging political bid with that of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

Onyonka acknowledged Matiang’i’s leadership credentials but questioned whether supporting his presidential ambitions should come at the expense of Sifuna’s growing political movement.

“Fred is one of the best managers I’ve ever known. If he becomes president, hallelujah. But you see, look at this young guy. How can I lose Sifuna so that I get Fred?” Onyonka asked, prompting a lively response from the crowd.

The remarks came moments after Sifuna was formally unveiled as TEP’s party leader and presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.

Sifuna’s entry into the presidential race marks a major shift in his political career, having previously served as ODM secretary-general before the party underwent changes following Raila Odinga’s death.

Onyonka also spoke positively about Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, arguing that the legislator would play an important role in the political formation surrounding Sifuna.

The launch brought together several opposition leaders and supporters as Sifuna sought to establish TEP as a vehicle for his presidential ambitions.

His allies have previously indicated that the party could eventually be rebranded as the Linda Mwananchi Movement, whose grassroots network has increasingly been associated with Sifuna’s 2027 campaign.

The latest development adds another dimension to the wider opposition discussions, with several political figures positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 contest.
