Ghanians Left in Shóck As 7 Women Arrested Over Alleged Use of Cedi Notes for Money Bouquet

According to a report by UTVGHANA on the 5th of October 2026, seven women have reportedly been arrested in Accra by the Bank of Ghana (BoG), in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, over the alleged use of Ghana cedi banknotes to create money bouquets, money cakes and other decorative items.

The arrests form part of efforts by the authorities to protect the integrity of Ghana’s currency and discourage practices that could damage or misuse banknotes. The development was reported by UTV Ghana.

Money bouquets and money cakes have become increasingly popular at social events, including birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and other celebrations.

Such arrangements often involve the use of several banknotes, which are folded, arranged or attached to decorative materials to create artistic displays.

While the practice has gained attention on social media and among event vendors, the latest arrests highlight concerns from financial authorities over the handling and use of the cedi outside its intended purpose as legal tender.

The Bank of Ghana has responsibility for issuing and maintaining the integrity of Ghana’s currency.

The central bank has previously urged the public to handle banknotes with care and avoid practices that could lead to their defacement, destruction or unnecessary deterioration.

The involvement of the Police Service indicates that the authorities are taking the reported activity seriously.

The seven women are expected to assist investigators as authorities examine the circumstances surrounding their alleged activities.

The development is also likely to renew public discussion about the appropriate use of Ghanaian banknotes, particularly at social functions where cash is sometimes incorporated into gifts and decorations.

Authorities may use the incident to reinforce public education on the proper handling of the cedi and the consequences associated with activities that may undermine the quality and circulation of banknotes.

For now, the women remain suspects, and the allegations against them would have to be established through the appropriate legal process.
