FAMILY THING: Uganda Youth Umbrella Endorses Gen. Salim Saleh For President 2031–2036

The Uganda Youth Umbrella has endorsed retired General Salim Saleh to stand for President of Uganda for the 2031–2036 term, saying his experience, economic empowerment programmes and contribution to national unity make him a suitable leader for the country’s future.

The endorsement was announced during the official launch of the Uganda Youth Umbrella, where the group said it would mobilise young people across the country to support what it described as Gen. Saleh’s vision for Uganda beyond 2026.

According to the youth organisation, Gen. Saleh’s contribution to leadership, peace, economic empowerment, youth development and national unity makes him a leader capable of bridging generations.

The Uganda Youth Umbrella described Saleh as a freedom fighter who contributed to Uganda’s liberation struggle and later became involved in programmes aimed at economic empowerment.

The group particularly cited his association with Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) and other wealth-creation initiatives, saying these programmes have encouraged young people to engage in agriculture, agribusiness, innovation and small-scale manufacturing.

The youth umbrella further argued that Saleh has demonstrated practical engagement with young people rather than merely speaking about youth empowerment.

It said his activities, including programmes based in Gulu and other parts of the country, have enabled him to interact with and mentor young Ugandans involved in different economic activities.

The Uganda Youth Umbrella also presented Gen. Saleh as a potential unifying figure, saying Uganda needs leadership capable of bringing together people from different regions, tribes and political backgrounds.

The group said Saleh’s experience in the country’s liberation struggle and subsequent involvement in economic programmes gives him an understanding of both Uganda’s political history and the economic challenges facing young people.

The organisation said its proposed political support is not based on politics alone, but also on the economy, particularly the need to create jobs and expand opportunities for young people.

It pointed to initiatives associated with wealth creation, industrial development and village-level economic models as areas it believes could form part of a future administration under Saleh.

The Uganda Youth Umbrella called on young people, including farmers, boda boda riders, students, entrepreneurs and other youth groups, to rally behind the vision it has outlined.

The organisation said the endorsement marks the beginning of a nationwide mobilisation campaign aimed at building support among young Ugandans.

The group described the initiative as a movement focused on Uganda’s future beyond the 2026 elections, under the slogan:

“Building Uganda’s Future, For the People, For the Nation.”

The endorsement comes as political activity and positioning for Uganda’s future leadership continue to generate debate ahead of the 2031 general elections.
