email facebook twitter Cameroon deployed plan to reinforce its military presence in northern Logone-et-Chari, in the Far North region, where authorities say several areas remain under severe security pressure from Boko Haram. The βLake Chad BIRβ contingent, currently estimated by the Defense Ministry at 800 troops, will increase to more than 1,000, Defense Minister Joseph Beti Assomo announced during a September 28, 2026, visit to Waza.
According to Cameroon Tribune, the 800 troops already mobilized are specially trained commandos stationed in Fotokol. The border town lies in the northern part of Logone-et-Chari, at the heart of an area affected by Boko Haram incursions.
The BIR reinforcement will be accompanied by the upcoming deployment of a Special Amphibious Battalion in the Lake Chad area. Beti Assomo specifically named Blangoua, Makari and Darak among the areas where security conditions remain a concern.
βThe northern part of Logone-et-Chari is currently in a situation of very severe distress,β the minister said, according to Cameroon Tribune. He added that conditions in those localities were more concerning than in Waza.
The government also plans to build a new military barracks in Waza. The Defense Ministry said a two-hectare site has been designated for the facility and that funding for the project is already included in the budget.
The announcements came during a joint September 28 visit to Waza by Beti Assomo and Territorial Administration Minister Paul Atanga Nji. The mission continued the following day, September 29, in Maroua, where officials held a meeting to assess the security situation across the Far North region.
Administrative and military officials from across the region attended the meeting. Discussions focused in particular on improving the mobility of surveillance units, pooling resources deployed in the field and remobilizing local vigilance committees.
The Defense Ministry said these community-based groups are expected to once again support defense and security forces in areas exposed to Boko Haram attacks.
