Big Blow to Gachagua as His Close Ally Joins Ruto’s Camp Ahead of 2027 Elections
Former Embakasi West MP George Theuri has left Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) and joined the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), marking another political realignment ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election.
Theuri formally joined ODM on September 29, where he was received by the party’s Secretary General, Catherine Omanyo. During the event, he pledged his support for the party and its political agenda, including the push for an inclusive government.
The former legislator represented Embakasi West in Parliament from 2013 to 2022. He lost the seat in the 2022 election while contesting on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, with Jubilee candidate Mark Mwenje emerging victorious.
Following his defeat, Theuri became closely associated with Gachagua after the latter was serving as Deputy President. Gachagua appointed him as his personal assistant, a position he retained until his recent political departure.
Reports of differences between Theuri and Gachagua had circulated earlier in the year, although Theuri had not immediately declared his next political direction. His decision to join ODM now marks a formal shift away from Gachagua’s political camp.
Theuri reportedly explained his decision by citing concerns over what he described as a lack of inclusive leadership and limited room for alternative views. He is also said to be preparing for another attempt to reclaim the Embakasi West parliamentary seat in 2027.
His move comes amid a period of significant political realignment across Kenya as parties and politicians position themselves for the next election.
While some leaders have moved towards Gachagua’s DCP, others have shifted towards different political formations. Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha and Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata have been associated with the DCP, while other political figures have also changed their affiliations.
Theuri’s departure is particularly notable because of his previous position within Gachagua’s political circle. His decision to leave the party adds to the broader movement of politicians between competing political formations ahead of 2027.
As the election approaches, such defections are likely to continue attracting attention as parties seek to strengthen their networks and build support across different regions.
