Assistant Director II Receives GH₵4,200 Monthly, Yet Someone Receives Same In A Day Meeting – Obenfo
Obenfo Nana Kwasi Gyetuah, National Executive Director of the Ghana National Council of Private Schools, has raised concerns over the difference between monthly salaries for public-sector workers and allowances paid for attending meetings.
Speaking to Onua TV on September 28, 2026, Gyetuah said it was difficult to justify a situation where an Assistant Director II at the Ghana Education Service earns approximately GH₵4,200 per month, while the same amount could reportedly be paid to someone as an allowance for participating in one meeting.
According to him, the disparity raises questions about public spending and could affect the motivation of workers in the education sector.
He noted that teachers perform several demanding duties, including preparing lessons, teaching, marking assignments and supporting students, and should therefore receive appropriate compensation.
Gyetuah further questioned the handling of unpaid salaries and allowances owed to teachers. He alleged that some outstanding payments were not properly documented, leaving affected workers uncertain about the amounts due to them.
His remarks came during an ongoing strike by teacher unions over unpaid financial obligations. The unions held discussions with the Ministry of Education on September 28 in an attempt to resolve the dispute. However, teachers have insisted that their arrears must be addressed before they resume teaching.
The prolonged strike has raised concerns about teacher welfare and payroll administration, as well as its potential impact on students.
Continued disruption could affect teaching schedules and students’ preparations for important examinations.
Gyetuah’s concerns have renewed calls for improved payroll records, prompt payment of legitimate arrears and a fair compensation system for education workers.
