After Two Terms as Governor, Kahiga Reveals the Big Political Seat He Will Seek in 2027

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has revealed his next political move after serving the county for two terms, confirming that he will seek another elective position in the 2027 General Election.

Kahiga, who is serving his final term as governor, said he still has the energy and desire to continue serving the people, but his next political role will be different from his current position.

The governor said his decision is also influenced by the need to protect the gains made in Nyeri during his tenure and ensure the county continues receiving effective representation.

“When I weigh myself, I still have the energy to serve, but most importantly is where we have taken Nyeri. I’m afraid that the gains we’ve made could be watered down,” Kahiga said.

He added that he had carefully assessed the leaders seeking the position and was convinced that Nyeri needs a strong voice capable of speaking up for the county.

“When I look at the people jostling for this seat, I’m convinced that Nyeri needs a leader who will speak and get heard,” he said.

Kahiga then disclosed the political seat he intends to pursue after leaving the governor’s office — the Nyeri Senate seat.

He explained that the Senate has an important role in protecting devolution, overseeing county resources and advocating for counties to receive a fair share of national resources.

“Senate has two roles: to speak for devolution and to provide oversight of county funds,” Kahiga said.

The governor argued that his experience running a county government places him in a strong position to understand and defend the interests of county governments at the national level.

Kahiga also maintained that Nyeri will need a senator who can provide effective oversight and ensure the county remains on the right path after the next administration takes over.

He further encouraged governors who have completed their terms to consider seeking Senate positions, saying their experience gives them a deeper understanding of devolution.

Kahiga cited former Mandera Governor Ali Roba, whom he said has been instrumental in advocating for counties and pushing for a more equitable share of national resources.
