4,799 special students enrolled in Institutions across Rawalpindi Division
Rawalpindi – As many as 4,799 students with different special needs are currently enrolled in special education institutions across six districts of Rawalpindi Division.
The students are being provided free education along with uniforms, shoes, textbooks, Braille books, teaching aids, transport, recreational tours and hostel facilities.
District Officer Special Education Shumaila Khan said that under the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, multi-billion-rupee projects were being completed for special children in Rawalpindi, Attock, Hassan Abdal, Taxila, Murree, Gujar Khan and Kallar Syedan.

These projects would provide special children with quality education, sports and other facilities and help them develop their abilities to bring a good name to the country at the international level.
She said the Department of Special Education was continuing educational and vocational training programmes for special children in Rawalpindi, Murree, Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal and Talagang.
For this purpose, three offices and workshops, one college, 10 secondary, 18 middle and 13 primary-level institutions are providing services. Children with hearing and visual impairments, physical and intellectual disabilities, slow learning abilities and autism are being provided education and training according to their specific needs.

According to department statistics, the 4,799 enrolled students include 46 children with autism, 1,957 with hearing impairment, 631 with visual impairment, 424 with physical disabilities, 1,214 with intellectual disabilities and 527 slow learners.
District-wise, 1,640 students are enrolled in Rawalpindi, 209 in Murree, 1,571 in Attock, 597 in Jhelum, 601 in Chakwal and 181 in Talagang.
Shumaila Khan said Provincial Minister Sania Ashiq and Secretary Punjab Special Education Shoaib Iqbal Saeed had directed that no compromise be made on the quality of education and facilities provided to special students.

She said students were provided one winter uniform and a pair of shoes in winter, while two summer uniforms and a pair of shoes were provided in summer. Textbooks, teaching aids and other essential educational materials were also provided free of cost, while Braille books were specially arranged for visually impaired students.
The department was also providing free pick-and-drop facilities to special students within the respective tehsil or town limits, covering a maximum distance of 50 kilometres one way.
For this purpose, 79 vehicles were available, including 75 operational vehicles and four off-road vehicles. Of these, 25 vehicles were allocated to Rawalpindi, five to Murree, 21 to Attock, 14 to Jhelum, 10 to Chakwal and four to Talagang.

She said free recreational tours were also arranged for special children to provide them with healthy and enjoyable activities alongside their education. Hostel facilities were available at seven institutions, where students were provided free accommodation and meals.
The Special Education Department was also providing technical and vocational training to special children to enable them to utilise their abilities, become self-reliant and play an active role in society.
