At least 2.1 million taxpayers out of 5.7 million have so far had their Tax Identification Numbers (TINs) mapped to National Identification Numbers (NINs) as Uganda moves to adopt NINs as the primary tax identifier for individuals, according to the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).
The government says the transition aims at curbing tax duplication and evasion, making NIN the primary tax identifier for individuals, licensing, and financial transactions, and improving Uganda’s tax-to-GDP ratio from 14 percent to 20 percent by 2029.
The NIN applies to individual taxpayers. Companies and other non-individual entities will be identified using the Business Registration Number.
