A review in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes linked dog ownership to a 24 per cent lower risk of death from any cause, and a 31 per cent lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

A nationwide Swedish study of 3.4 million adults pointed the same way. Dog owners had a lower risk of death overall, and people living alone with a dog had a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Its twin-register analysis, however, could not replicate the benefit.

Part of the answer may be movement. The Swedish researchers noted that a meta-analysis of eleven observational studies found dog owners walked more and were more physically active than non-owners.

A dog does not negotiate. It waits by the door, rain or shine, and the owner gets steps they might otherwise have skipped.

A later Scientific Reports analysis of adults aged 50 and older found slower cognitive decline among dog and cat owners. Bird and fish owners showed no such association.

Most of this research is observational. It shows association, not cause, and healthier, more active people may simply be likelier to keep dogs. One meta-analysis found no link between pet ownership and all-cause mortality, only a modest protective effect on cardiovascular outcomes.

The stress story is similar. A review of 129 studies on human-dog interactions found results were inconsistent, with roughly a third reporting benefits for blood pressure, heart rate or stress levels.

The opening statistic is real, but it is not a prescription. A pet is a living creature with needs of its own, which is precisely what this year’s World Animal Day asks readers to consider. If the health benefits come, they will come to people who see the world through their animal’s eyes, and show up every day.
