Woman found dead after bodaboda she boarded ran out of fuel

Raychelle Dorothy Syamba Adhiambo was just a few kilometres from home when the journey ended in tragedy.

The 38-year-old mother of two had travelled to Nakuru for a graduation ceremony at Kabarak University. She left the town in high spirits, sharing updates with her family and looking forward to returning home in time for Christmas.

But sometime after 10 p.m., as she travelled from Bondo towards her family home in Got Agulu near Usenge, communication with her suddenly stopped.

Raychelle had arrived in Bondo from Kisumu and hired a boda boda to complete the final leg of her journey. She remained in contact with her sister, Maureen, as the motorcycle made its way along the Bondo-Usenge route.

The distance was not particularly long—roughly 25 to 30 kilometres. But at night, parts of the road can become isolated and quiet.

Raychelle and her sister had agreed to meet in Usenge.

The motorcycle had reportedly run out of fuel.

According to the family account, the incident happened on a rough road away from the main Bondo-Usenge highway. Raychelle reportedly asked whether anyone could assist them with a jerrycan so that the journey could continue.

It was the last clear communication her family received from her.

Her father, Arthur Syamba, was informed but hoped that his daughter would simply arrive home late. The family waited through the night, reluctant to imagine the worst.

Passers-by reportedly discovered Raychelle’s body near Magawa Primary School, about 200 metres from the Bondo-Usenge road. Her body had allegedly been dumped away from the main road.

Her phone and some of her personal belongings were missing.

The discovery turned what had begun as an ordinary journey home into a murder investigation.

Her fiancé, Peter Adulu, travelled from Vihiga the following day and began searching hospitals for her. His search eventually led him to the Bondo Sub-County Mortuary, where he found Raychelle.

Bondo Sub-County Police Commander Robert Aboki said the boda boda rider who had been carrying her was a prime suspect, according to the family and police account. Homicide detectives subsequently took over investigations, while a post-mortem examination was ordered to establish the circumstances and cause of her death.

Raychelle’s family, however, has been left with more questions than answers.

Why did the motorcycle suddenly run out of fuel? What happened after the phone went silent? How did Raychelle end up hundreds of metres away from the road? And where was the boda boda rider?

Those questions remain at the centre of the investigation.

Raychelle was not just a victim in a police file. She was a mother to Jayden and Adrian, a daughter to Arthur and Beatrice, a professional and a woman pursuing her ambitions.

She worked as a committee clerk with the Public Accounts Committee at the Vihiga County Assembly and was also studying law at Busoga University. Colleagues and people who knew her professionally described her as dedicated to her work.

Her death has also shocked those who had worked alongside her. A former Senate staffer who knew her through the Public Accounts Committee reportedly said he only learned of her death after her burial.

Raychelle was laid to rest at Got Agulu as her family and friends mourned a life cut short.

By the time of her funeral, no arrest had been publicly announced and no confirmed motive for the killing had been established.

There has been speculation online that she could have been targeted because of her work, but those claims have not been established by investigators and should not be treated as fact. The official investigation remained focused on establishing exactly what happened during the final moments of her journey.

Her story is haunting because of how close she was to safety.

She had left Nakuru after a graduation ceremony. She had travelled through Kisumu. She had reached Bondo. She had boarded a motorcycle for the final stretch home.

Then came the report that the motorcycle had run out of fuel.

What happened between that final phone call and the discovery of her body remains the unanswered question her family is waiting for investigators to solve.
