When El-Rufai Said He Was Coming From Egypt I Told Kwankwaso To Beg Him Not To Come Back— Galadima

A chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Engineer Buba Galadima, has revealed that he warned former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to be cautious about returning to Nigeria, claiming that the former governor could either be forced into exile or face imprisonment.

Galadima made the disclosure while speaking on Naija Unfiltered on SYMFONI TV, where he discussed El-Rufai’s political situation and his relationship with former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

According to Galadima, he had previously cautioned El-Rufai about the possible consequences of his political activities and public conduct. He said his warning was not made privately but had also been expressed publicly during media appearances.

The NDC chieftain said he became particularly concerned when El-Rufai announced that he would return to Nigeria from Egypt.

Galadima said he subsequently approached Kwankwaso and asked him to persuade El-Rufai not to return, arguing that the political circumstances at the time could expose the former Kaduna governor to serious difficulties.

He said, “I’m not the best friend of El-Rufai. In fact, I advised him that he should be careful of the way he carries himself, that either he goes on exile or they will jail him. I said so on record on the BBC and on either Arise or Channels TV. When he said he was coming from Egypt, I went and met Kwankwaso and told Kwankwaso that he should beg him not to come back. These people did not mean well to him. Kwankwaso called him and he postponed the day he said he was coming, but suddenly he announced another date and came.”

Galadima claimed that Kwankwaso subsequently contacted El-Rufai after receiving the warning. According to him, El-Rufai initially postponed the date of his return but later announced another date and eventually came back to Nigeria.

The NDC chieftain also alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was determined to retain power and could take measures against political opponents in pursuit of that objective.

Galadima further suggested that El-Rufai’s current difficulties were connected to actions he allegedly took against other people while in positions of authority.

He, however, stressed that his position should not be interpreted as a request for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene on El-Rufai’s behalf.

According to Galadima, he was not asking the President to release El-Rufai or interfere with any legal proceedings involving him. Rather, he said his concern was that the law should be applied fairly.

He also referred to other individuals who, according to him, had faced similar circumstances but were subsequently granted bail.
