WANTAM Chants Rocks the Air, Kindiki Forced to End His Speech and Flee Amid Clash With Youths

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s political engagement in Limuru, Kiambu County, was reportedly interrupted by loud “WANTAM” chants, creating an uncomfortable and tense atmosphere during a gathering attended by a large crowd.

According to reports from the event, the chants became increasingly intense while Kindiki was addressing residents. The disruption reportedly became severe enough for the Deputy President to bring his speech to an early end before leaving the venue.

National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah was also reportedly present at the gathering but later left as the chants grew louder. The incident has attracted attention because of the growing political competition in the Mt Kenya region ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election.

There were also claims that people attending the event had been mobilised and paid Sh4,000 each. However, the allegation has not been independently verified, and there is no confirmed evidence establishing that payments were made to attendees.

Kindiki was in Limuru on Saturday, October 3, as part of his continued political engagements in the region. During his interaction with residents, he highlighted various government initiatives, including programmes aimed at supporting the dairy sector. He also addressed concerns surrounding illicit alcohol and the government’s efforts to tackle the problem.

The Deputy President further urged Kenyans to embrace political tolerance, cautioning leaders and their supporters against using ethnicity as a tool for political mobilisation. He stressed the importance of ensuring that political disagreements do not develop into hostility, division or violence.

However, the reported disruption highlights the increasingly competitive political environment in Mt Kenya, a region that remains strategically important ahead of the next election.

The “WANTAM” slogan has increasingly been used by political groups opposed to President William Ruto’s re-election ambitions. It has particularly featured at gatherings associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his Democratic Citizens Party.

The events in Limuru could therefore become another indication of the political challenges facing leaders seeking to strengthen their influence in Mt Kenya. As the 2027 election approaches, competing political factions are expected to intensify their outreach, with public gatherings increasingly becoming important platforms for demonstrating support and measuring political sentiment.
