Trucker Abandons Steering Wheel at 60 km/h to Grab His Phone—Then Instantly Regrets It

In a viral dashcam video uploaded by the popular YouTube channel SA Trucker, a driver is caught on camera making a series of jaw-droppingly reckless decisions that end in a violent rollover crash.
The footage, which is timestamped to early 2026 but exploded across social media in August and September, serves as a masterclass in how not to operate a heavy commercial vehicle.
The video begins peacefully enough, showing the unbuckled trucker cruising down a rural highway. However, the situation quickly deteriorates. Refusing to pull over, the driver decides to treat the moving vehicle like his living room.
With the truck cruising at 64 km/h, for some wild reason, the driver completely stands up from his seat, turning his back to the windshield and leaving the steering wheel completely unattended as he rummages around in the sleeper bunk behind him.
Miraculously, the truck stays straight, and the driver sits back down. But the temptation of the bunk proves too strong. He repeatedly half-crouches and twists backward while the rig continues to roll down the highway.
Now, you can only play Russian roulette with an 18-wheeler for so long. On his third attempt to dig through the back of the cab, his luck finally runs out.
At a certain point, the driver plunges his upper body into the sleeper bunk, entirely abandoning the steering wheel once again. Within seconds, the unattended truck begins to veer off the road.
The driver realizes his mistake and desperately lunges forward to grab the wheel, but it is far too late. The truck careens off the asphalt, violently crashing and rolling over, sending the unbuckled driver tumbling helplessly through the air and smashing into the passenger-side dashboard area.
While SA Trucker brought the video to a global audience, internet sleuths and road safety organizations quickly tracked down the context. The dashcam’s on-screen GPS coordinates—19.2.62826N 96.13.58646W—pinpoint the exact location of the crash to a highway in the state of Veracruz, Mexico.
But what could possibly be so important in the sleeper bunk that it was worth abandoning the steering wheel of a moving truck?
According to external updates and the driver’s official accident report via Imagen Noticias, the answer is infuriatingly simple: a ringing cellphone.
“I was trying to get my phone on the bed behind me. It was ringing,” the driver admitted in his official police statement following the incident. “I did this while I was driving. I’m sorry about this; I should have stopped the truck”.
Authorities in Veracruz have not publicly confirmed the driver’s medical condition or announced specific criminal charges, but the footage has since sparked international outrage over the extreme dangers of driver complacency.
