Suspect Identified And Pronounced Dead After Shootout With Hernando County Deputies In Spring Hill

SPRING HILL, Fla. – Authorities have identified the man killed in a weekend deputy-involved shooting in Spring Hill as 59-year-old Kevin Joe Monday.

Monday was pronounced dead at the scene from his injuries Saturday night following an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement behind a business off U.S. 19, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

The fatal confrontation stemmed from an earlier domestic call that afternoon around 2:30 p.m. Sheriff Al Nienhuis stated deputies were dispatched after a report that a suspect had threatened a girl under 10 years old before leaving the residence.

Investigators confirmed Monday was a registered sex offender and a convicted felon with a record of violence toward police, including a past charge of battery on a law enforcement officer. Deputies developed probable cause for domestic assault, domestic battery, and felon in possession of a firearm. They began preparing a search warrant for the residence while road patrol units actively searched the area, citing concerns over threats Monday allegedly made to harm others and himself.

Just before 8:00 p.m., a deputy spotted Monday’s vehicle near Hunters Lake Road and Lorry Drive, behind the Family Car Wash. Monday drove north on Lorry Drive toward U.S. 19 and pulled to a stop behind Mavis Tires & Brakes, south of Applegate Drive.

Before the initial deputy could place his patrol car in park, Monday jumped out of his vehicle and opened fire on him. The deputy threw the patrol car into reverse, ducked down in his seat, and backed away several yards to find cover.

Additional deputies arriving from the U.S. 19 entrance approached perpendicular to Monday’s car. Monday shifted his aim toward those arriving units and began firing in their direction. Two deputies returned fire, striking Monday and halting the attack.

During the exchange, Monday fired rounds in multiple directions. One stray bullet crossed U.S. 19 to the southwest, striking an empty vehicle in an Arby’s parking lot and shattering its window.

No deputies were injured. Monday was treated at the scene but succumbed to his gunshot wounds. Authorities indicated they do not believe any of the wounds were self-inflicted.

The two deputies who discharged their firearms have been placed on standard administrative leave. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is leading the investigation into the shooting, while the sheriff’s office handles the underlying domestic violence and weapons probe.
