Start of El Niño? Prepare for Heavy Rains If You Live in the Following Areas
Kenya is set to experience increased rainfall across several parts of the country over the next five days, raising fresh concerns as the country enters the October-December rainy season.
The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority (KMSA) has forecast moderate to heavy rains in various counties from Sunday, October 4, to Thursday, October 8, with rainfall expected in the Coast, Central, Northern Kenya, Western, Rift Valley and Lake Victoria Basin regions.
Residents in several areas have been advised to prepare for changing weather conditions, with some counties expected to experience thunderstorms alongside the rains.
In the Coast region, Mombasa, Kilifi and Kwale are expected to receive moderate rainfall mainly during the afternoons and nights throughout the forecast period. Lamu will experience light showers in the mornings and at night, while Taita Taveta is expected to receive light rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday.
In Northeastern Kenya, Wajir is expected to receive morning rains from Sunday through Thursday. Mandera will experience light rains on Monday and Tuesday, while Marsabit is forecast to record light morning rains throughout the five days, with additional light showers at night.
Isiolo is expected to receive light afternoon showers on Sunday and Monday, while Meru will experience morning rains throughout the period, accompanied by light afternoon showers.
Tharaka-Nithi and Embu are also expected to receive morning rains and afternoon showers during the five-day period.
Residents of Kitui, Machakos and Makueni should also expect light morning rains throughout the period, followed by afternoon showers from Monday to Thursday.
In Central Kenya, Nyeri is forecast to receive light rains on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, while moderate rainfall is expected on Tuesday morning. Kirinyaga and Murang’a are expected to receive morning rains throughout the forecast period.
Nairobi and Kiambu are also among the areas expected to receive morning rains over the five days. Moderate afternoon showers are forecast for Wednesday and Thursday.
The weather department has also highlighted Western Kenya and the Rift Valley, where heavy rains are expected in several areas.
Trans Nzoia and Elgeyo-Marakwet are forecast to experience thunderstorms from Monday to Wednesday. Kericho, Bomet, Nandi and Baringo are expected to experience a similar rainfall pattern.
Kakamega and Vihiga are expected to receive afternoon rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms from Monday to Thursday. Bungoma is forecast to record afternoon rains on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, while Busia could experience similar conditions on Tuesday and Thursday.
In the Lake Victoria Basin, Siaya, Kisumu and Homa Bay are expected to receive heavy rains throughout the forecast period, particularly during the afternoons.
The latest forecast comes as Kenya prepares for the October-December rainy season, which the report says coincides with a projected El Niño event.
With several counties expected to receive heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, residents in the affected areas may need to remain alert to changing weather conditions during the coming days.
