Sonko Shares A Glimpse Of Wicknell Chivayo’s Ancestral Home where He Will Be Laid To Rest

According to reports circulating online, a video showing the ancestral home of late Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo has drawn widespread attention following his death in a helicopter crash.

The footage offers a glimpse of Chivayo’s rural roots in Gandami Village, located in the Chivhu area of Zimbabwe. Unlike the luxurious properties and expensive lifestyle frequently associated with the businessman, the video shows a modest homestead featuring traditional grass-thatched houses and a quiet rural setting.

The images have sparked interest online because of the contrast between Chivayo’s humble ancestral surroundings and the affluent lifestyle he became known for during his rise to prominence. His social media presence often featured luxury vehicles, expensive properties, high-profile events and displays of wealth.

Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko shared the video while mourning Chivayo and reflecting on his connection to his ancestral home. According to Sonko, the businessman would be laid to rest on his family’s ancestral land in Gandami Village.

Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, reportedly died alongside other occupants when their helicopter crashed near Marondera on September 30, 2026. The incident brought an abrupt end to the life of a businessman who had become a familiar figure in Zimbabwe’s public space through his business activities, philanthropy and high-profile relationships.

Reports further indicate that Chivayo and his wife had visited their rural home shortly before the fatal accident. During the visit, Chivayo was reportedly monitoring the construction of a new house on the property.

The emergence of the video has since encouraged discussions about Chivayo’s journey from his rural background to becoming one of Zimbabwe’s most prominent and publicly recognised businessmen.
