Sent Money to the Wrong M-Pesa Till or Paybill? Here’s How to Recover Your Money Back To M-Pesa
Safaricom customers who accidentally send money to the wrong Till or Paybill number can request a reversal, although the process is different from reversing a normal M-Pesa transfer.
A simple typing mistake when making a payment can result in money being sent to the wrong business. Since Till and Paybill transactions are linked to merchant accounts, customers may need Safaricom’s assistance before the funds can be recovered.
Customers should act as soon as they realise they have made the wrong payment. They should keep the M-Pesa transaction message because it contains important details needed when making a reversal request.
The transaction ID, amount sent, date of payment and incorrect Till or Paybill number are among the details that may be required during the process.
One of the available options is contacting Safaricom customer care. Customers can dial 100 or 234 and explain that they made a payment to the wrong Till or Paybill number.
Safaricom can then review the transaction and engage the receiving business as part of the recovery process. The merchant may be contacted to confirm whether the payment was received and whether the transaction can be reversed.
Where the merchant agrees to return the money, the refund can be processed. Customers may receive the funds within the stated reversal period, although the time taken can depend on the circumstances surrounding the transaction.
Customers can also seek assistance through Safaricom’s WhatsApp support service. They should provide the transaction details and explain that the payment was sent to the wrong Till or Paybill number.
For some Paybill payments, customers may be directed to contact the organisation that received the money because certain organisations have their own procedures for handling erroneous payments.
Safaricom’s M-Pesa Business Till service allows merchants to receive customer payments and carry out various business transactions. This makes payments to Till numbers different from ordinary person-to-person M-Pesa transfers.
Customers therefore cannot use the normal SMS reversal process for a payment made to a Till or Paybill. Instead, such transactions require assistance and verification before a reversal can be completed.
For ordinary M-Pesa transfers sent to another Safaricom customer, the reversal process is different. Customers can forward the original M-Pesa transaction message to 456 to request a reversal, subject to Safaricom’s applicable conditions.
The Hakikisha feature can also help customers avoid sending money to the wrong person by displaying the recipient’s details before a transaction is completed.
Customers making payments to businesses should carefully confirm the Till or Paybill number and the displayed business information before pressing the final confirmation button. Taking a few seconds to verify the details can help prevent the difficulty of recovering money after an incorrect payment.
