RIP: Last Painful Words A Businesswoman Told Her Daughter Before She Died Along Mombasa Road

Details have surfaced about what a Mombasa businesswoman said to her daughter before she died with 16 other pilgrims in a road accident at Salama on the Nairobi to Mombasa Highway.

The group was travelling to Subukia for the National Prayer Day.For the relatives left behind, the loss is still painful to accept.

One of them is Sarah Nashivanda, whose mother died in the accident.

Sarah said her mother left the house at around 11pm to head to the Subukia Shrine.

In their final conversation, her mother said she had left everything to her and urged her to look after herself well.

Sarah said those were the last words she ever heard her mother speak.

What started as a journey of faith ended in grief. Seventeen families are now mourning relatives who never made it to Subukia.

Most of the pilgrims were women, and they were travelling from Mombasa to attend the National Prayer Day.The group comprised parishioners and choir members from St Mathias Mulumba Catholic Church in Mikindani Parish.

They had set out hoping to join thousands of other worshippers at the national shrine in Nakuru.

A trailer travelling towards Mombasa reportedly lost control and struck several vehicles, among them the van carrying the pilgrims.

Sultan Hamud Sub County Hospital reported that 17 adults died, including three men and 14 women.

Locals describe the Salama stretch as a hazardous spot and are demanding quick repairs to prevent more fatalities. Police have also advised motorists to avoid reckless overtaking, stay within speed limits and follow road signs.

The bodies are being held at the Sultan Hamud Hospital mortuary as relatives prepare to identify and collect them.

President William Ruto offered his condolences to the grieving families, the Mikindani parishioners and the wider Catholic community. He also wished the injured a swift recovery.
