Folagade Banks has spent years proving that a memorable character can make Nigerians stop scrolling. With A Mama Deola Wedding Story, he attempts the more difficult task of proving that the same character can keep them watching for the length of a feature film. That gamble does not entirely pay off.
Directed by Femi Adebayo and produced by Banks, A Mama Deola Wedding Story is Kava’s first original film. It expands Banks’ popular Mama Deola character from short-form social media comedy into a feature-length wedding comedy. The film follows Demilola (Omowunmi Dada) and Femi (Rotimi Salami) as preparations for their wedding become entangled in family expectations, pressures, misunderstandings, and the larger-than-life personality of Mama Deola.
It is a familiar Nollywood formula: put two families, a wedding, and a collection of strong personalities in the same room and wait for trouble. The difference is that this time, the trouble has a face Nigerians already know.
The movie tells the story of Mama Deola (played by Folagade Banks), who is determined to fund and execute a dream wedding for her beloved son, Femi (Rotimi Salami), and his bride-to-be, Demilade (Omowunmi Dada). However, the road to the altar is anything but smooth.
Refusing to let her son be intimidated or outclassed by the snobbish in-laws, Mama Deola aggressively takes the reins of the wedding preparations. Determined to prove her family’s worth, she dives into planning an over-the-top, chaotic Nigerian celebration filled with endless catering demands and a massive guest list.
Meanwhile, the young intended couple were struggling with Femi’s past, which kept haunting them as they planned their wedding, often leading to arguments and misunderstandings. On the other hand, Demilade’s family had its own chaos: her parents were separated, and her mother, Mrs Rochelle, was not entirely supportive of the marriage because she felt they did not belong to the same social class.
As the wedding events unfold, everything that can go wrong does. But would their love prevail?
Mama Deola works brilliantly as a skit character because Banks understands the mechanics of instant comedy. Within seconds, the audience knows what kind of character has entered the scene. But what works for three minutes does not automatically work for two hours. That is the fundamental problem with ‘A Mama Deola Wedding Story.’
The film does not sufficiently reinvent Mama Deola for the feature-film format. Instead, it repeatedly stretches the same comic personality across scenes that require more than exaggeration to remain engaging. The result is a character who is often funny but gradually becomes predictable. The louder she gets, the less surprising she becomes.
Banks clearly understands the character, but understanding a character is different from developing one. Instead, it largely remains committed to the familiar performance that made the character popular online.
The movie consequently feels, at several points, like a long sequence of Mama Deola skits connected by a wedding. The biggest casualty of the Mama Deola experiment is arguably the film’s central couple.
Demilola and Femi are supposed to be at the heart of a story about marriage. Yet the film often makes their relationship feel secondary to the spectacle surrounding them.
The film’s cast is another source of both strength and frustration. With actors including Shaffy Bello, Toyin Abraham, Bukky Wright, Idowu Phillips, Akin Lewis, Erica Nlewedim, Omowunmi Dada and Rotimi Salami, the production has considerable acting experience.
Yet several of these performers feel like visitors to a story that belongs almost entirely to Mama Deola. The problem with a star-driven Nollywood comedy like this is that it creates expectations and falls short of meeting them; casting a famous actor does the same. Writing a meaningful role fulfils it.
The film’s greatest achievement is that it reveals both the possibilities and the limitations of moving Nigeria’s skits into feature filmmaking without depth or innovation. However, Folagade Banks deserves credit for leaping. He has taken a character created for social media and built a feature around her, backed by an experienced director, established actors, and an unusually large production. But ambition cannot replace structure.
The film demonstrates that a popular skit character can attract an audience to a feature. What it does not quite demonstrate is that popularity alone can sustain a feature-length story.
