John Khaminwa is a veteran lawyer with over 50 years of experience in the legal field.In addition to his legal practice, Khaminwa is recognized as a champion and defender of human rights.He is recognized by many for his unique demeanour, boldness, and speaking truth to power despite his age.
The veteran lawyer owns a law firm under the name Khamniwa and Khaminwa Advocates which he formed alongside his late wife Joyce Khaminwa.
John Khaminwa has had a decorated career in the legal field throughout his career.Khaminwa started practicing law in 1973 and has won several cases throughout his career and featured in very high-profile cases in the corridors of justice.Besides being politician previously he had married, but his wife passed on.Khaminwa was married to the late Lady Justice Joyce Nuku Khaminwa, a no-nonsense judge renowned for her integrity and fearless defense of justice. Their marriage spanned 48 years until Joyce’s passing.
She was a formidable figure, having even sued the Judicial Service Commission in 2014 when they attempted to retire her. The couple had four children: Albert, Arthur, Anne, and Angela.
Albert Khaminwa, their eldest, followed in his parents’ footsteps as a Senior Partner at Khaminwa & Khaminwa Advocates.
He earned his law degrees from the University of Warwick but tragically passed away in 2017, leaving behind his wife Cecilia and daughter Hillary Joyce.Arthur Khaminwa resides in Mombasa, Kenya, and is a University of Leeds graduate, while Angela and Anne are both human rights activists.
Angela holds degrees in Political Science and Dispute Resolution from U.S. institutions and has worked in mediation and conflict resolution in Kenya and the United States.
She currently resides in Austria. Anne, on the other hand, is based in the United States and has written extensively on Pan-Africanism and peacekeeping.
Khaminwa embarked on his legal journey more than 49 years ago, co-founding Khaminwa and Khaminwa Advocates in 1974 alongside his wife, Joyce Khaminwa. Their specialization in constitutional matters laid the foundation for a firm with a clear policy: to represent anyone seeking assistance. It was this open-door approach that set the stage for Khaminwa’s career.
In recognition of his selfless dedication, he was honored as the Volunteer Advocate of the Year at the 2021 Kituo Annual Paralegals Awards (KAPA) organized by Kituo cha Sheria.
Over the years, he has taken on over 1,000 pro bono cases, leaving a mark on the quest for justice for Kenyans who cannot afford legal fees.
“I enjoy listening to problems other people are facing, the complaints they have to tell you and then you go to court and try your best to represent them effectively. I have been more or less addicted,” the lawyer candidly shared in an interview on NTV.
