Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote is widely recognised for building one of Africa’s largest business empires, but he has generally maintained a relatively private personal life despite his enormous public profile.

According to a 2022 profile by DNB Stories Africa, Dangote has been married twice, with both marriages ending in divorce. His first reported marriage was to Hajia Zainab in 1977, when he was about 20 years old. The couple reportedly had two daughters before eventually separating.

Zainab has largely remained outside the public spotlight, and little verified information is available about her life after the marriage.

Dangote later married businesswoman Mariya A D Muhammad Rufai, who has been reported to be the daughter of a former Bauchi State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Human Services. Over the years, Dangote has been linked in media reports to other women. One of the most prominent names was Nafisat Yar’Adua, daughter of former Nigerian President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. He was also linked to former beauty queen Sylvia Nduka, but reports about the alleged relationship were subsequently denied by a source close to Dangote.

Dangote is reported to have four children: daughters Mariya, Halima and Fatima, as well as Abdulrahman Fasasi, who was adopted and is recognised as his son.

Some of his children have developed careers in business and professional fields. Halima has held a role within the Dangote Group and has been involved in the family’s business interests. Fatima has also pursued interests in law and business, including a cupcake venture in Lagos.
