Josh Allen avoids a safety with a controversial heads-up play
Comments FacebookTweetLinkedInRedditThreadsWhatsAppEmail Josh Allen was equal parts lucky and good during Sunday’s game.
The Buffalo Bills quarterback Allen wisely saved his team two points in their Week 4 matchup against the New England Patriots. In the third quarter at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y., Allen was pressured on a 3rd-down play deep in his own territory.
Allen ended up all the way in his own end zone. But as he was being sandwiched by two Bills defenders for a seemingly-surefire safety, Allen wisely flipped the ball behind his back up the field.
The ball made it back to the line of scrimmage and was simply ruled an incomplete pass. Here is the video.

The heads-up play by Allen immediately sparked controversy online though. Many users believed that he should have been flagged for intentional grounding, especially since Allen seemingly did not have a receiver in the immediate area and also appeared to be out of the pocket at that point.

In any case however, the referees swallowed their whistles there, so Allen ended up with a brilliant, high-football-IQ moment to keep the score at 21-17. While the former NFL MVP Allen notably cost his team some points during last year’s playoffs, he ended up saving his team some points instead during Sunday’s game against New England.
