Paris has seen its fair share of fashion statements, but Janhvi Kapoor just stole the show by turning something familiar into something entirely new. Draped in a bare-shouldered saree and topped with a blouse more fitting for a jewellery box than a conventional top, the diva managed to give traditional Indian dressing an astonishing Parisian edit. With desi glamour, sculptural styling and high-fashion drama, every detail proved that the saree can easily stand on its own on the most international stage of the fashion industry.

At the elite BoF 500 gala, Janhvi wore an elegant Pankaj S Heritage saree, styled by Rhea Kapoor. The light shade of ivory drape featured low pleating at the waist, giving the saree a modern silhouette that softly hugged her curves. However, she was unconventional with her pallu, as instead of pinning it over the shoulder traditionally, she wore it loose from her right arm, touching the ground. This unconventional draping made the pallu fall off her shoulders, exposing the neckline and adding a trendy spin to a classic saree.

The saree was matched with a bustier-style blouse featuring thin straps and a sweetheart neckline. It also had minute horizontal pleating for a bit of texture. However, the highlight of the whole look was in the jewellery. Instead of a traditional neckpiece, Janhvi chose to show off her shoulders, making the blouse one of a kind. The beautiful detailing adorning her shoulders looked like elaborate shoulder angels on her arms.

The intricate arm decoration consisted of several strings of gold-coloured beads, pearls, and shells made with a composition of pink fabric ribbons. The layered decorations hung gently from the shoulders to the wrists, providing nice movement to the otherwise rigid ivory outfit. In keeping with her necklace choice, she also wore massive gold ear cuffs and multiple bracelets consisting of shells and beads on her wrist.

The warmth of Janhvi’s beautiful look matched her outfit’s neutral hues. Her makeup included perfectly shaped eyebrows, velvety eyeshadow, bronzed cheeks, and a shiny highlighter. The understated lip was chosen so it would not clash with her heavily ornamented jewellery. As for her hair, Janhvi settled for a neat, centre-parted bun. This sleek hairstyle strongly contrasted with the softer textures of her saree, shells, pearls and tassels, effectively pulling the entire look together.

In contrast to the usual red-carpet scenes, Janhvi Kapoor’s most recent fashion statement showed a contrast in how she put together a statement saree and blouse. It also combined traditional Indian dressmaking techniques with Parisian elements. At the BoF 500 event, Janhvi indeed made a strong argument that the modern saree is a global fashion item that does not need to lose its Indian origins to fit into the world of haute couture.
