Inside The Kenyan Lodge Built Into A River Gorge Where Guests Wake Up To Wildlife
Imagine spending the night in a luxury room built into the side of a rocky river gorge, then waking up to the sounds of wildlife from nearby Nairobi National Park.
This unusual experience is available at The Emakoko, a boutique safari lodge located along the Mbagathi River on the northern boundary of Nairobi National Park.
Unlike an ordinary city hotel, The Emakoko is designed around its natural surroundings. The lodge is built into the Mbagathi River gorge, with its accommodation following the slope of the landscape.
The property has just 10 luxury safari suites, making it a much smaller experience than most hotels. Five of the suites are positioned along the cliff while the other five are closer to the river and main lodge.
The rooms have private verandas, fireplaces and views of the surrounding landscape. The lodge says guests can wake up to the distant sounds of lions, giving the stay a very different atmosphere from a normal Nairobi hotel.
Another feature that makes the lodge unusual is its private access to Nairobi National Park.
Guests can take game drives in the park and see animals including lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, buffaloes, giraffes and black rhinos. Nairobi National Park is particularly unique because it sits next to Kenya’s capital city.
The park was established in 1946 and covers about 117 square kilometers. Kenya Wildlife Service says it is home to more than 100 animal species and more than 400 bird species.
The Emakoko also has a private house for visitors travelling as a group. The accommodation has two en-suite bedrooms, a shared living area, a private swimming pool and a dedicated game vehicle.
The lodge’s location means visitors can combine a city trip with a safari experience without travelling deep into the Kenyan countryside.
For international visitors, this creates an unusual opportunity to experience wildlife while remaining close to Nairobi.
For Kenyans looking for a different weekend or special-occasion experience, the lodge offers another example of how the area around Nairobi National Park has developed into a destination for luxury wildlife tourism.
The Emakoko may not have the famous giraffe-at-the-window experience associated with Giraffe Manor, but its setting offers something completely different: a luxury stay surrounded by the landscape of a national park, with wildlife just beyond the lodge.
