Gujarat cop jumps onto moving car, four held in Rs 3.76-crore gold loot case
In a dramatic police chase, an Ahmedabad Rural Police officer reportedly grabbed the driver of a moving car and brought the vehicle to a halt, leading to the arrest of three suspects and recovery of gold and other valuables allegedly looted from a passenger at Nadiad railway station.
Four people have been arrested in connection with the robbery and the entire stolen property, valued at Rs 3.76 crore, has been recovered, Ahmedabad Rural Police and Western Railway Police said on Sunday.
The robbery took place around 5.30 p.m. on October 3 when complainant Bharatbhai Chaudhary, a resident of Mojru in Deodar taluka, got off the Howrah-Ahmedabad Express at Platform 2 of Nadiad railway station.
According to police, unidentified persons snatched his green bag containing around three kg of gold before fleeing in a white car.
Following the complaint, the Ahmedabad Rural Police control room alerted police units across the district. A team of the Local Crime Branch (LCB), working with Western Railway Police and using technical analysis, traced the suspects and monitored their movements.
Police received information that the accused were heading towards Viramgam, following which teams from the Viramgam division set up roadblocks at strategic locations.
Ahmedabad Rural LCB Head Constable Himanshubhai Parmar intercepted a Baleno near Panchmukhi Hanuman Circle and arrested Savan Chaudhary, a resident of Khoda village in Banaskantha district.
Police then learnt that three other suspects were carrying the stolen property in a Tata Tiago and fleeing towards Nilki village. Viramgam Town Police Inspector S.A. Gadhvi, along with his team and LCB personnel, pursued the vehicle.
According to police, the suspects accelerated towards Bahucharaji in an attempt to escape. Gadhvi opened the door of the moving Tiago, caught hold of the driver, took control of the steering and brought the vehicle to a stop.
The police then surrounded the car and arrested the three occupants, recovering the allegedly stolen property.
The recovered items include gold chains valued at Rs 3,70,30,851, five mobile phones worth Rs 30,000, a four-wheeler valued at Rs 6 lakh and Rs 8,900 in cash, taking the total value of the recovered property to Rs 3,76,69,751.
A case has been registered at Nadiad Railway Police Station under Sections 309(4), 351(4) and 54 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
