Green Anaconda Strikes Bakkie on South African Dirt Road, Leaving Mzansi Stunned

A video showing a huge green anaconda lunging toward a bakkie on a remote dirt road has generated significant discussion among South Africans, with social media users questioning how a snake native to South America could have ended up in the country.

The footage was shared by Slangboere, a South African platform known for snake-catching and educational content, and began circulating widely again on September 30, 2026. However, the clip is not a new recording. Reports indicate that Slangboere had previously uploaded the same footage on September 16, meaning the later post should not be interpreted as evidence of a recent encounter.

In the video, apparently filmed from another vehicle, an enormous snake can be seen lying near the edge of a dirt road. As a bakkie drives past, the reptile suddenly moves toward the vehicle, creating a startling scene that quickly attracted attention online.

Slangboere identified the animal as a green anaconda and dismissed suggestions that the footage had been produced using artificial intelligence. According to the page, the snake’s sudden movement may have been a defensive response, particularly if it interpreted the approaching vehicle as a threat.

Green anacondas are native to South America and are among the world’s largest snakes. They are non-venomous constrictors and are particularly associated with wetlands, swamps and areas surrounding slow-moving waterways. Their enormous size and strength have made them one of the most recognisable snake species in the world.

Despite the attention generated by the footage, the precise location where it was recorded has not been publicly confirmed. There is also no verified information explaining how the animal came to be in the area.

Several possibilities have been discussed, including the possibility that the snake may have escaped from captivity or been illegally kept. However, these remain unconfirmed and should not be presented as established facts.

The video has consequently raised more questions than it has answered. While viewers continue to debate the animal’s origin and circumstances, available information confirms only that the footage has circulated online and that Slangboere identified the snake as a green anaconda. There is currently no verified evidence establishing how the reptile came to be on the South African road.
