Green Anaconda Strikes Bakkie on South African Dirt Road, Leaving Mzansi Stunned

A video showing a massive green anaconda lunging at a bakkie on a rural dirt road has sparked widespread reaction in South Africa, with social media users questioning how a giant South American snake ended up in the country.

The footage was shared by South African snake-catching and education page Slangboere and circulated again on September 30, 2026. However, reports indicate that the same video had previously been posted by the page on September 16. As a result, the latest circulation should not be interpreted as evidence that the encounter happened recently.

The dramatic footage, apparently recorded from inside another vehicle, shows the enormous snake lying beside a dirt road. As a bakkie approaches and passes the reptile, the snake suddenly lunges towards the vehicle, creating a startling scene that quickly attracted attention online.

Slangboere identified the reptile as a green anaconda and dismissed speculation that the footage had been generated using artificial intelligence. The page also suggested that the snake’s sudden movement could have been defensive, particularly if it perceived the approaching vehicle as a threat.

Green anacondas are native to South America and are known for their extraordinary size and strength. They are non-venomous constrictors and are regarded as the heaviest snakes in the world by body mass. The species is typically associated with wetlands, swamps, rivers and other areas containing slow-moving water.

Despite the intense online speculation, the precise location where the footage was recorded has not been publicly established. There is also no verified information explaining how the snake came to be on the South African road.

Possibilities such as an escaped captive animal, illegal possession or another form of human intervention remain unconfirmed. For now, the footage confirms an unusual encounter but does not establish the circumstances behind the anaconda’s presence in South Africa.
