Gachagua Claims Late Chivayo Was Holding Sh1.5 Trillion Linked to Ruto

Questions over the finances allegedly linked to late Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo have been raised following fresh claims by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Gachagua alleged that more than Sh1.5 trillion belonging to President William Ruto was being held by Chivayo when the businessman died.

The claim was made during a meeting between Gachagua and clergy in Boston, United States, amid continued attention on Chivayo’s death.

The Zimbabwean businessman, his wife and four other people were killed when their helicopter crashed in Zimbabwe on Wednesday.

Gachagua claimed that Chivayo had been involved in business dealings with Ruto while he was serving as Deputy President.

He further alleged that the businessman was used to receive, transport and keep money allegedly belonging to the President.

According to Gachagua, large amounts of money were allegedly received in dollars before being transported by aircraft.

He claimed the aircraft would land at private airstrips before the money was taken away for storage.

Gachagua said his knowledge of the alleged dealings came from his position as Ruto’s deputy at the time.

He described Chivayo as a business associate of the President while making the allegations during his address.

The former Deputy President further claimed that Chivayo was left holding more than Sh1.5 trillion at the time of his death.

He suggested that the deaths of Chivayo and his wife had created uncertainty over what would happen to the money he alleged was being held.

No documentary evidence was presented by Gachagua during the address to substantiate the claims.

The allegations have also not been independently verified, and no evidence has been publicly presented establishing that Chivayo held such funds for Ruto.

Chivayo’s death has brought renewed attention to his interactions with prominent Kenyan political figures.

The businessman had publicly documented engagements with Ruto, including meetings and social events before his death.

A recent meeting between the two was reported to have taken place at State House in Nairobi on September 9.

The engagement reportedly involved discussions surrounding a proposed Sh25.94 billion infrastructure investment.

Chivayo had also maintained business interests and relationships across the region before his death.

However, the existence of publicly documented interactions with Ruto does not by itself establish Gachagua’s separate allegations concerning the alleged funds.

Gachagua’s remarks come as Kenya’s political landscape increasingly shifts towards the 2027 General Election.

His claims also add a new dimension to political disagreements between the former Deputy President and the current administration.

The allegations concerning Chivayo’s alleged role in handling money for Ruto remain unproven.

Any determination concerning the claims would require documentary evidence or findings from an independent investigation.

Chivayo died together with five other people in the helicopter crash in Zimbabwe.

The circumstances surrounding his death and the details of his business dealings are expected to remain subjects of public interest as investigations and inquiries continue.
