First PPPA initiative in water supply, sewerage sector in Punjab signed

LAHORE  –  Significant progress has been made towards the first public private partnership (PPP) initiative in water supply and sewerage sector in Punjab, Transaction Advisory Services Agreement was signed for water and sanitation projects in Kasur and Chakwal. The event was organised under the convenorship of Chief Executive Officer Punjab Public Private Partnership Authority (PPPA) Dr Zeeshan Hanif. The Chief Officers of Kasur and Chakwal and MD Wasa signed the agreement with the International Finance Corporation (IFC). Under the agreement, water supply and sewerage projects will be completed in Kasur and Chakwal at a total cost of 20 billion rupees. Under the Punjab Inclusive Cities Program, projects in both cities will be completed on a public-private partnership model. International Finance Corporation (IFC) and World Bank will provide transactional advisory and technical support for water supply and sewerage projects to proceed on PPP model. Under the projects, municipal committees and WASAs will provide water supply and drainage services to the citizens with the participation of the private sector. The Punjab Inclusive Cities Program with the support of the World Bank aims to improve the quality and accessibility of services in the WASH sector. The Punjab Municipal Development Fund Company (PMDFC) under the Municipalities Department of Punjab is providing technical and institutional support for the implementation of the programme. DGP Wasa Tayyab Fareed, MDPM MDFC Syed Zahid Aziz, Deputy Commissioner Chakwal Sara Hayat Gondal, Deputy Secretary Municipal Department Shahid Latif, ADCG Kasur Dr Kaleem and other officers participated in the event. Apart from the representatives of IFC and World Bank, PMDFC’s PPP Expert Moinuddin Shaikh, GMIDPMDFC Mahmood Masood Tamna and World Association of PPP Units and Professionals Communication Specialist Ayesha Iftikhar also participated in the event.
