City of Lago Vista confirms death of police officer

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The city of Lago Vista released a statement Sunday regarding the death of a Lago Vista Police officer.

The city said Officer Brandon Carey passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Carey’s death reportedly occurred while off-duty and outside of the Lago Vista City Limits, the city stated.

“At the time of his death, the officer was suspended from duty pending a criminal investigation being conducted by Travis County,” the city said.

The officer’s family was immediately notified and the Lago Vista Police Department employees were notified Saturday. The city added that mental health professionals were available to assist those employees.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Carey family, the employees of the Lago Vista Police Department, and our community,” the city said.

The city stated it will not discuss confidential investigative information or speculate about the circumstances of his death. The Travis County Sheriff’s Office is in charge of both the criminal investigation and the death investigation.
