Bollywood Heroines Growing Wary of Telugu Directors?

A growing sense of hesitation appears to be emerging among some Bollywood actresses when it comes to signing Telugu films, with the writing of female characters becoming a point of concern.

While Tollywood has traditionally attracted Bollywood heroines with its scale, commercial reach and pan-India exposure, some actresses reportedly feel that female characters in Telugu films are often underwritten or reduced largely to glamour roles.

“Telugu directors are not writing strong or logical roles for heroines, which is why some Bollywood actresses are now maintaining their distance,” says a director. According to him, actresses today are increasingly looking for characters that offer them performance opportunities and have a meaningful impact on the story.

The issue has also sparked comparisons with Deepika Padukone, who reportedly walked out of the Kalki sequel following differences with the makers. The actress continues to remain active in Bollywood, where she has several opportunities to headline substantial roles.

Janhvi Kapoor is another name being discussed in this context. Although she received offers for subsequent Telugu projects following Peddi, she has reportedly not signed another Telugu film so far.

Meanwhile, Rasha Thadani’s Telugu debut Srinivasa Mangapuram also failed to make the expected impact. She reportedly returned to Mumbai after the film’s disappointing performance, further fuelling discussion about the experiences of Bollywood actresses entering the Telugu industry.

At the heart of the issue is reportedly job satisfaction. Some actresses feel that South Indian filmmakers, particularly in commercial cinema, tend to focus heavily on the hero while giving heroines limited narrative importance. Even when the characters are integral to the story, they are sometimes written primarily as romantic partners or glamour elements rather than as fully developed individuals.

For actresses increasingly seeking performance-oriented and memorable roles, the quality of characterisation is becoming an important factor when choosing projects.

If Telugu filmmakers want to continue attracting leading Bollywood talent, industry observers believe that writing stronger, more substantial and better-developed female characters could become crucial.

‘Things will turn around if Priyanka Chopra shines bright in ‘Varanasi’ with a meaty role since it is a commercial and hero-centric adventure. If Priyanka steals the show, then her Bollywood colleagues could turn up,” the director concludes.
