Thousands of demonstrators gathered at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate under the banner “Never Again War,” protesting Germany’s military build-up and warnings about a potential future confrontation with Russia. Berlin police estimated around 5,800 people attended the demonstration, which brought together peace initiatives from across Germany. Protesters accused Western governments of focusing on rearmament, threats and military preparedness instead of negotiations and compromise. Some also rejected warnings that Russia could eventually attack Germany, pointing to Moscow’s repeated statements that it does not intend to wage war against the country. The demonstration comes as European governments debate higher defence spending and preparations for a possible wider confrontation with Russia. Ukraine and its Western partners accuse Moscow of responsibility for the war and extensive destruction in Ukraine. But protesters in Berlin called instead for de-escalation, arguing that Europe should seek a path away from another conflict rather than preparing its population for one.
