Two Migrant Workers Killed As Borewell Rig Overturns Onto House in Keralam
Kasaragod: Two migrant workers were killed after a tractor-mounted borewell drilling rig overturned onto a house at Varakkad in West Eleri here in the early hours of Saturday, police said.
The deceased were identified as Devender, a native of Madhya Pradesh, and Manasar, a native of Chhattisgarh.
The accident occurred at around 2 am when the driver reportedly lost control of the tractor while negotiating a steep descent, causing it to overturn onto the house, police said.
The two workers were trapped beneath the overturned vehicle and sustained serious injuries. Locals rushed to the spot and shifted them to a hospital, where they were declared dead, police said.
The house belongs to Paul Francis, who had rented it out to Jayson and his family. The family had a narrow escape as they were sleeping on the floor in the hall when the accident occurred.
The drilling machine mounted on the tractor came to rest on the plinth of the house, preventing the vehicle from crashing through the walls into the interior, police said.
The stretch has witnessed similar accidents in the past, with a lorry and a jeep also overturning at the same spot, police said.
The house was partially damaged in the accident, police said.
The bodies have been shifted to a hospital in Kanhangad and will be handed over to the relatives after postmortem, police added.
