Shai Hope powers West Indies to record ODI chase against India

Shai Hope produced a stunning unbeaten 162 as West Indies chased down 352 against India in New Chandigarh on Saturday, 24NewsHD TV reported.

The West Indies reached the target with 10 balls to spare, recording their highest successful ODI run chase.

Their previous best was 331 for five against Ireland in 2019.

Hope’s remarkable innings also made him the first wicketkeeper-captain to score more than 150 runs in an ODI.

His 162 not out was the highest score by a West Indies men’s batter in a successful ODI chase, surpassing Brian Lara’s 153 against Pakistan in Sharjah in 1993.

It was also the second-highest score by a captain in a successful ODI chase.

India captain Shubman Gill holds the record after scoring an unbeaten 223 in the second match of the series.

India, who won the toss and elected to bat, posted 351 for five.

KL Rahul led the way with an unbeaten 129, hitting 16 boundaries, including six sixes.

India lost early wickets as West Indies pacer Jayden Seales dismissed Gill for one and Virat Kohli for a duck from successive deliveries.

Rohit Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad then steadied the innings before Rohit fell for 92 and Gaikwad was dismissed for 57.

He and Amir Jangoo put on a strong opening partnership before Jangoo was run out for 89 following a mix-up in the 21st over.

Hope continued to anchor the chase and reached his 21st ODI century in the 34th over. He later found valuable support from Sherfane Rutherford and Keemo Paul, who scored a quick 44.

India briefly fought back by removing Paul in the 41st over, while injuries also added to West Indies’ concerns.

But Hope remained calm under pressure and accelerated when the required rate began to rise.

He reached 150 with a boundary in the 48th over before Gudakesh Motie added an unbeaten 19.

Hope then guided West Indies home with a memorable innings.

India won the three-match ODI series 2-1.

The two sides will now meet in a five-match T20I series, beginning on October 6 in Lucknow.
