NDC delegation leaves NPP conference over delayed start
A delegation from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has left the New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Delegates Conference in Kumasi after expressing frustration over delays in the commencement of the event.
The NDC delegation, led by Deputy National Organiser Dzifa Tsegah, arrived at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in the morning to deliver a solidarity message to the NPP but departed after waiting several hours for proceedings to begin.
The NPP conference, scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2026, has brought together 7,163 delegates from across the country to elect national officers and consider proposed amendments to the party’s constitution.
Speaking to the media before her departure, Ms Tsegah said the NDC delegation arrived at about 9:30 a.m. but was still waiting close to 2 p.m. for the programme to commence.
She said the delay raised questions about the organisation of the conference and urged the NPP to address its internal challenges as it seeks to strengthen its role as the opposition party.
“We were here half past 9 a.m., it’s almost 2 p.m. and we have been waiting and it doesn’t look like they are ready,” she said.
Ms Tsegah explained that the NDC delegation had come to extend solidarity to the NPP and wished the party well in its internal elections.
She said Ghana’s democracy required a strong opposition capable of holding the government to account.
“I really hope this election will pull the best out of them because we need a strong opposition to make sure democracy is alive and on its toes,” she said.
The NDC Deputy National Organiser said the delegation had other engagements to attend and therefore could not continue waiting for the conference to begin.
The NPP’s National Delegates Conference is being held to elect national officers, with 45 candidates contesting nine key positions.
The event was initially scheduled to commence at 9 a.m., but reports indicated that the start was delayed by the late arrival of delegates at the venue.
