Ghana’s New Cedi Notes: Bank of Ghana Clarifies What to Expect Ahead of November Launch
The Bank of Ghana has provided clarification on the upcoming Heritage Series of banknotes, following growing public interest and social media discussions about the introduction of redesigned Ghanaian cedi notes.
The central bank has explained that the Heritage Series is an upgrade of Ghana’s existing banknotes and does not represent a redenomination of the cedi.
The exercise covers the current denominations of GH¢1, GH¢2, GH¢5, GH¢10, GH¢20, GH¢50, GH¢100 and GH¢200. According to the information provided, there will be no new denomination above GH¢200 introduced as part of the Heritage Series.
The redesigned notes are expected to include enhanced security features, improved durability and updated designs intended to reflect aspects of Ghana’s history and national identity.
The Bank of Ghana has indicated that the changes are aimed at strengthening protection against counterfeiting while improving the durability and cost-effectiveness of managing the country’s currency.
Contrary to some public speculation, the upgraded banknotes will not be changed from the current cotton-based material to polymer. The notes will instead continue to use a reinforced cotton substrate designed to make them more durable.
The central bank has also clarified that the introduction of the Heritage Series will not make the existing banknotes invalid.
Current notes already in circulation will remain legal tender and will continue to circulate alongside the redesigned notes. Members of the public will therefore not be required to immediately exchange their existing cash when the new series is introduced.
The Heritage Series is scheduled for its official launch on November 3, 2026, at the Bank Square in Accra.
The announcement has generated considerable interest among Ghanaians, particularly regarding the appearance of the redesigned notes, their security features and the historical personalities or national symbols that may feature on them.
The Bank of Ghana has encouraged the public to rely on official information as the launch date approaches and cautioned against misinformation surrounding the currency upgrade.
