The Obamas are celebrating 34 years of marriage.
Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama marked their 34th wedding anniversary on Saturday, Oct. 3, by sharing tributes to each other on social media — and Barack’s included a snap from the couple’s July PEOPLE cover photo shoot.
Barack, 65, shared the photo of himself looking lovingly at Michelle, 62, and wrapping his arms around her waist on Instagram, along with a message to his longtime love.
“Happy anniversary, @MichelleObama! I’m still the luckiest guy in the world to be with you,” he wrote in the caption of the anniversary post.
Michelle, meanwhile, shared an Instagram compilation of videos and photos of the former first couple over the years, including their 1992 wedding, their time in the White House and some more recent snaps of the couple embracing each other.
“Loving you just keeps getting better and better!” she wrote in the caption. “Happy anniversary, @BarackObama. Here’s to many, many more years of joy, laughter, and memories to come. 💕.”
The couple’s anniversary comes a few months after they reflected on their relationship — including how their lives would be different if they’d never met — in their wide-ranging sit-down with PEOPLE.
“I knew almost immediately, and looks like I made a pretty good bet, that this was a one-of-a-kind woman with the integrity and character, smarts and values to make me better,” Barack told PEOPLE of his wife of over three decades. “Just being with her made me better, and she still does.”
“And that she would [give] our kids a foundation that would pay off for them — and that’s in fact what’s happened,” the former president continued, referring to his and Michelle’s two daughters: Malia, 28, and Sasha, 25.
For her part, Michelle told PEOPLE that she and her husband “are each other’s counterbalance.”
If she had never met the former president, she explained, “The truth is, I probably would have been someone who stayed more put. I think I would have had a beautiful life here, but it would have been smaller. But because of who my husband is, he offered all of us — our girls, my mom, my family — a broader sense of what’s possible in life.”
“He made me think more broadly about what I could do with this Harvard law degree besides be a lawyer,” she said of Barack. “He gave me the courage. He was my ballast. He was like, ‘I got you.’ And however hard it’s been, the ups and downs, he’s got me.”
“And she grounds and anchors me,” Barack then chimed in of his wife. “It’s worked out a’ight.”
