But Lungani Mabaso said he’s nothing like his on-screen character.
Lungani (33 from Durban, KZN, plays gangster Phefeni on the SABC1 telenovela Uzalo.
He said the role has changed how people see him, and that gives him confidence in his acting talent.
Lungani said he sometimes has to explain the difference between Phefeni and who he is in real life.
“Uzalo caters for all audiences. Among them, there are people who love the show so much, but they still find it challenging to differentiate between the character they watch on TV and the real person living in the real world.
“That’s sad, but at the same time, we mustn’t be mad at those people. What I do is explain, so they understand.
“So, I find myself defining who Phefeni is and how different he is from me,” said Lungani.

He joined Uzalo in 2024 during the production’s 10th season.
He now acts alongside popular actors, including Masoja Msiza, who plays the dangerous Nkunzi.
Lungani said those who grew up with him know he has always loved acting.
“I was a quiet young man when I was growing up, and my peers didn’t think I was going to fit into the acting industry.
“But look at where I am now. This has taught me that talent is important, no matter the personality,” he said.
Though many TV viewers only got to know him when he joined Uzalo, Lungani has appeared in several TV and theatre productions, including Shaka iLembe, Imbewu: The Seed, Untombazi, The Island, Isibaya, and Housekeeper.
