Prepare for Heavy Rains in the Next 5 Days If You Live in These Areas
Kenyans in several parts of the country have been advised to prepare for changing weather conditions after the Kenya Meteorological Department issued a new five-day forecast covering the period from Saturday, October 3, to Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
The weather agency expects rainfall in 45 of Kenya’s 47 counties during the period, although much of the forecast rainfall is expected to be light to moderate. Turkana and Uasin Gishu are the only counties expected to remain dry throughout the five days.
According to the forecast issued on Friday, October 2, residents in western Kenya and the Rift Valley should particularly watch the weather from Monday, when thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are expected in several counties.
Among the areas likely to experience light showers with thunder and lightning are West Pokot, Trans Nzoia, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, Homa Bay and Migori.
Kisii and Nyamira are expected to receive moderate showers accompanied by thunder and lightning on Monday and Tuesday.
The weather outlook also points to cold nights in parts of the country. Nyandarua is expected to record some of the lowest nighttime temperatures, with readings falling to 5°C on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The county could record 7°C on Saturday and Wednesday, while daytime temperatures are expected to remain between 25°C and 26°C.
Other counties likely to experience chilly nights include Samburu, Uasin Gishu, Kericho, Laikipia, Narok and Nandi, where temperatures could fall to around 10°C on different days.
In the coastal region, Mombasa, Kwale and Kilifi are expected to receive showers throughout the five-day period. Mombasa could experience moderate showers on Sunday and Wednesday mornings, as well as on Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Daytime temperatures in the coastal city are expected to reach between 29°C and 30°C.
The central highlands will also experience rainfall, with moderate showers expected at night from Sunday through Wednesday in Kiambu, Tharaka-Nithi and Embu. Nyeri is forecast to receive moderate rain on Tuesday morning, while Murang’a could experience moderate showers on Monday afternoon.
Nairobi is expected to remain sunny on Saturday before light showers develop on Sunday afternoon and night. Light rains are then forecast during the mornings of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with showers also expected at night. Temperatures in the capital are expected to range between 13°C and 16°C at night and 27°C to 30°C during the day.
Meanwhile, parts of northern Kenya are expected to remain hotter and largely dry. Mandera could record highs of 38°C on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday, while Turkana may also reach 38°C on Sunday. Wajir is expected to record temperatures of up to 36°C on Sunday and Tuesday.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has urged members of the public to use the five-day forecast together with its daily 24-hour weather updates. Residents seeking more specific information have also been advised to consult their respective county directors of meteorological services.
