Lynn Ngugi Questions Wicknell Chivayo’s Wealth: ‘Where Was All This Money Coming From?’
Kenyan media personality Lynn Ngugi has raised questions about the source of the vast wealth displayed by late Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo, days after his high-profile lifestyle once again became a subject of public discussion.
Lynn questioned how Chivayo, who became known across Africa for his luxury cars, multimillion-dollar giveaways and relationships with influential political figures, managed to build such an extraordinary fortune.
In a post shared on Thursday, October 1, Lynn said she had been trying to understand the businessman’s rapid rise and the level of access he appeared to have to powerful personalities.
“How do you suddenly become that rich, that connected and start giving away cars and millions like it’s nothing?” she questioned.
She followed up with another question that has generated discussion online:
Lynn, however, did not present her questions as proof of wrongdoing.
She described her thoughts as a personal theory, noting that she felt there was something she did not fully understand about Chivayo’s rise to wealth.
“I don’t know, something is just not adding up for me… Just a theory, guys,” she said.
Chivayo’s extravagant lifestyle Chivayo built a reputation for openly displaying his wealth, particularly through social media.
The Zimbabwean businessman frequently posted images and videos involving luxury vehicles, private aviation, expensive gifts and large cash donations.
His generosity became one of the most recognisable aspects of his public image, with reports documenting gifts to musicians, religious organisations, sports personalities and other individuals.
A recent report by Billionaires.Africa said Chivayo had given away luxury vehicles, houses and substantial amounts of cash, while a separate report by ZimLive estimated that his publicly declared handouts had exceeded $44 million in the two years leading up to his death.
His final public post, published on September 30, 2026, also reflected the scale of his generosity. Hours before his death, Chivayo announced luxury gifts to two lawyers who had supported him over the years.
According to K24 Digital, he offered one lawyer a 2026 Lexus GX 550 valued at about US$220,000 together with US$250,000 in cash. Another lawyer was promised a Range Rover Sport Autobiography and US$500,000 in cash.
The post attracted even more attention after news emerged that Chivayo had died later that day.
Chivayo had publicly attributed his fortune to business, particularly government-linked energy, infrastructure and construction projects.
His business career was closely associated with Intratrek Zimbabwe, a company involved in major energy and infrastructure projects.
In a 2025 interview with The Standard, Chivayo described a business portfolio spanning renewable energy, infrastructure and logistics across several African countries.
He also spoke about his ambition to become Zimbabwe’s first young billionaire.
Among the most prominent projects associated with him was the Gwanda Solar Project in Zimbabwe, which was initially valued at about US$172 million. His companies also pursued other large-scale government-linked contracts.
The size of those contracts, however, should not automatically be confused with Chivayo’s personal wealth.
Contract values represent the value of projects and do not necessarily equal an individual’s income, profits or assets.
Another factor that contributed to public curiosity around Chivayo was his relationship with senior political figures.
He was frequently photographed with Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa and, in his final years, increasingly appeared alongside other influential African leaders.
His relationship with Kenyan President William Ruto also attracted significant attention, particularly after the two were seen together during Chivayo’s visits to Kenya.
The Times reported in August 2026 that Chivayo had developed relationships with leaders in Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania and Eswatini, making his access to powerful figures an important part of his public profile.
It is this combination of enormous wealth, political access and highly publicised generosity that appears to have prompted Lynn’s questions.
Chivayo faced scrutiny over business dealings Chivayo’s wealth and business dealings had previously attracted scrutiny in Zimbabwe.
Some of the criticism centred on government contracts and allegations concerning procurement and political influence.
Chivayo denied wrongdoing, and some allegations did not result in findings against him.
For example, reporting on the controversial supply of election materials in Zimbabwe has documented allegations involving companies linked to Chivayo.
At the same time, Billionaires.Africa reported that the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission said in December 2025 that it had found no evidence linking Chivayo to that particular deal.
That distinction is important because questions and allegations surrounding a businessman’s wealth are not themselves evidence that the wealth was illegally obtained.
Lynn’s comments came at a particularly significant moment because Chivayo died on September 30, 2026, in a helicopter crash in Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwean authorities confirmed that the aircraft crashed in the Marondera area with six people aboard and that there were no survivors.
His family subsequently confirmed that Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, were among those killed.
The 43-year-old businessman had remained highly visible until his final day.
His last social media post was published only hours before the crash and involved promises of luxury vehicles and cash to two lawyers he described as longtime friends and advisers.
His death has therefore renewed attention on the extraordinary life he built, his business empire, his philanthropy and the questions that had surrounded his wealth.
Lynn Ngugi’s remarks have added a Kenyan voice to the wider conversation surrounding Chivayo’s fortune.
Her central questions were not accompanied by evidence alleging criminal conduct.
Instead, she focused on the apparent speed of Chivayo’s rise, his access to powerful people and the extraordinary amounts of money he appeared willing to give away.
Chivayo himself had repeatedly presented his success as the result of business, determination and faith, while critics and commentators had questioned aspects of his business relationships and access to government-linked opportunities.
With his death now confirmed, many of the questions surrounding his business empire are likely to remain subjects of public debate as more information about his companies, contracts and assets emerges.
