Ghanaians Left In Shòck As GES Deputy Director Reveals The Amount He’s Been Paid After 34 Years

According to a report by The BBC Ghana yesterday which was Thursday, October 1, 2026, a Ghana Education Service teacher who joined the profession in 1992 has shared his personal experience of the financial difficulties he has encountered despite spending 34 years serving in the education sector.

The teacher, who has attained the position of Deputy Director, disclosed in an interview with Luv FM that he currently receives a monthly take-home salary of about GH¢6,000.

Despite his long period in the teaching service, he said he has not been able to secure a property of his own. He explained that his financial circumstances remain challenging, forcing him to continue using trotro as his main means of transportation to work.

For him, the situation is difficult to reconcile with the number of years he has spent working in the teaching profession and the responsibilities associated with his current position.

The teacher was candid about his feelings towards his career, describing his decision to become a teacher as the biggest regret of his professional life. He further indicated that his experience has shaped his views about the profession among his children.

He revealed that he has three children and does not expect any of them to pursue teaching as a career in their lifetime.

His remarks have added to the ongoing conversation about the welfare of teachers in Ghana and whether educators receive adequate financial rewards for their years of service.

The teacher is calling for improved conditions of service, arguing that educators should be able to attain a reasonable level of financial stability after dedicating many years to teaching.

His concerns come at a time when teacher unions are also pressing authorities over various employment-related issues, including salaries, promotions, outstanding arrears and working conditions.

As discussions about the welfare of teachers continue, his account has highlighted the personal financial challenges some educators say they face even after decades of service.
