They appealed to those with missing family members to visit Soshanguve cop shop.
The police said they couldn’t confirm whether the body was that of a man or woman as it is badly decomposed.
Tshwane district police commissioner Major-General Samuel Thine said: “The decomposed body was found in a dam in Soshanguve. The body looks like it was there for more than two months. The body is badly decomposed and can’t see whether the body is a male or female.
“Tests are still being ran in terms of investigation to determine who this person is, how long that body was there and what was the cause of death.”
“When you look at the body, you can definitely see that the legs and hands are there, but it looks like the head is missing.
“We are not sure whether the head is somewhere. It’s disintegrated because of decomposition. The investigation is ongoing. Maybe we might find other pieces to link to the whole body,” he said.
Thine said the police are still searching around the area and in the water.

Meanwhile, Thine led Operation Shanela in Atteridgeville and Laudium, Tshwane on Thursday, 1 October.
He said a male suspect was arrested on Monday, 28 September.
“We ran an intelligence driven operation together with the team of Atteridgeville that are investigating murders and extortions.
“We took out a firearm that was found at a crime scene to ballistics and it came out that it’s linked to two counts of murder and attempted murder. Hence, the suspect was arrested. We cannot overrule that this is the person linked to extortion in Atteridgeville and surroundings,” he said.
He said 12 residents, including women in Atteridgeville, were arrested for vigilantism in July 2026 after they allegedly killed four people.
He said through the detectives, they bust more than 250 suspects on Wednesday, 30 September. Police arrested over 60 undocumented foreigners, closed four illegal shebeens, and checked liquor compliance.
