Tanzania claims to spend 2bn/- monthly to treat motorcycle accident victims at MOI

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzanian government spends between Sh1.5 billion and Sh2 billion every month to cover medical treatment for some victims of motorcycle accidents, commonly known as bodaboda, at the Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI).

The figures were provided on September 30, 2026, in Dar es Salaam by Minister for Home Affairs Patrobas Katambi, who said MOI receives between 7,000 and 9,000 patients each month requiring medical treatment.

According to Katambi, 78 percent of the patients do not have health insurance, while some have no relatives or close family members able to cover their medical expenses.

He said the situation forces the government to shoulder the cost of treatment for some of the patients, including victims of bodaboda accidents.

Katambi urged bodaboda riders to comply with road safety laws and regulations to reduce accidents, deaths and injuries affecting both riders and other road users.

The traffic situation in Dar es Salaam is worsening. The traffic signal violations 3-4 years ago were mostly by Bodaboda drivers but now even the Bajajis and the cars are ignoring the traffic rules. It’s also strange to see policemen directing traffic when traffic lights are working but you don’t see these policemen when the traffic lights don’t function; that’s when they are needed the most. Most traffic policemen are seen more busy in stopping vehicles to check the documents.

Also, the BRT system with only 2 lanes on either side for vehicular traffic is bad idea now that Dar es Salaam is growing rapidly; overhead metro rail with 3 lane roads on either side would have been a better solution keeping in mind the future road congestion.
