Muhoozi Sets Record Straight On Besigye’s Alleged Role As Museveni’s Doctor

Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has rejected claims that opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye ever treated President Yoweri Museveni, saying his father was instead treated by the late Dr Bata.“Besigye never, ever treated Mzee. Mzee was treated by late Dr. Bata,” Muhoozi said in a September 15, 2026 statement.The remarks challenge accounts that have described Besigye, who served as a military doctor during the 1981–1986 Bush War, as Museveni’s personal physician.Muhoozi did not give further details about when or under what circumstances Dr Bata treated Museveni. However, his comments were aimed at disputing what he considers a misconception about Besigye’s historical relationship with his father.Besigye and Museveni have a long political history dating back to their time in the National Resistance Movement before Besigye later became one of Museveni’s leading political opponents.Muhoozi’s statement comes amid renewed public attention on Besigye, who remains involved in court proceedings.
