I Went To So Many Mosques Across Iran, And They Are Empty, People Are Turning Back From Islam”Thomas

According to a video posted on CBN News on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, CBN senior international correspondent George Thomas said he personally witnessed widespread religious disillusionment during his travels in Iran, claiming that many mosques were largely empty.

Thomas made the observation while discussing what he described as a quiet change taking place among ordinary Iranians.

The journalist, who has visited more than 120 countries, said Iran remains his favourite destination because of its people. He added that many Iranians had privately expressed frustration with the Islamic government that has ruled the country since 1979.

Thomas said younger Iranians have increasingly questioned their parents over why strict religious rule was allowed to take hold decades ago.

In his words, George Thomas said, “I went to so many mosques across the nation, and they’re empty. And they’re in essence turning to secularism, but then we have all this incredible story of how today Iran is the fastest growing where Christianity is growing the fastest,” he said.

Thomas explained that many young Iranians believe more than four decades of religious rule have left the country worse off, both economically and emotionally.

He said this generational change has coincided with reports of growing interest in Christianity in Iran, even as the government continues to publicly enforce Islamic law.

According to Thomas, understanding the reported religious shift among Iranians is important to understanding the wider situation in the country, alongside its military development and economic challenges.

He also noted that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is among the officials he believes understands the influence of religious ideology on Iran’s leadership. Thomas said this remains important when examining Tehran’s decisions and its ongoing confrontation with the United States and Israel.
