Govt Declares Ksh 400,000 Fine Or 2-Year Jail To All Kenyans Caught Driving The Following Vehicles
Kenya is considering tougher punishments for motorists and transport companies that overload vehicles or deliberately avoid official weighing stations.
The proposed changes are contained in new draft regulations seeking to strengthen enforcement of vehicle weight limits and protect the country’s road infrastructure. Once approved, the rules would allow authorities to take stronger action against offenders.
The regulations require vehicles weighing more than 3,500 kilograms to undergo mandatory checks at designated weighing stations. These inspections will help confirm whether commercial vehicles are carrying loads within the legal limits.
Operators who attempt to bypass weighing stations could face heavy penalties, including fines reaching KSh400,000 and possible imprisonment of up to two years depending on the circumstances.
The government is pushing for stricter compliance because overloaded trucks place excessive pressure on roads, leading to faster damage and higher repair costs. The measures are also intended to improve road safety and promote responsible transport practices.
However, the proposed penalties are still under review and cannot be enforced until the regulations complete the necessary legal procedures.
Motorists, truck owners and transport firms have been encouraged to monitor official announcements from KeNHA and other authorities for updates on the final rules.
The planned regulations are part of broader efforts to preserve Kenya’s highways and ensure that vehicle operators follow established loading standards.
