Ghanians Left in Shóck As GNAT, NAGRAT & PRETAG Says Keep Your Children At Home
According to a report by BBCGhana on the 1st of October 2026, parents in the Northern Region have been urged to keep their children at home as three major teacher unions maintain their ongoing industrial action.
The Northern Regional leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Pre-Tertiary Education Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) has reiterated that teachers will not return to the classroom until government addresses the concerns that triggered the strike.
The unions said their decision to continue the industrial action is based on the need for government to take concrete measures to resolve the issues raised by teachers.
They explained that although discussions with the authorities are continuing, there has not yet been sufficient progress to warrant a return to work.
As a result, members of the three unions are expected to remain on strike until further notice.
The development has created uncertainty for parents and students who had expected normal academic activities to resume.
However, the teacher unions have asked parents and guardians to keep their children at home rather than sending them to schools during the period of the strike.
The unions’ leadership maintained that their action would remain in force until the concerns raised by teachers receive the necessary attention from government.
The strike has also renewed attention on the working conditions and outstanding demands of teachers within Ghana’s pre-tertiary education sector.
The unions are expected to continue engaging government officials as efforts are made to find a resolution to the dispute.
Parents have consequently been advised to follow official updates from the teacher unions and relevant education authorities regarding any decision to suspend the strike.
Until an agreement is reached, the unions have made it clear that their members will remain away from the classroom.
The situation places further pressure on both sides to reach an understanding that will allow teaching and learning to resume and minimise disruption to students’ education.
