La Shikitele denies involvement in Laboma Beach Resort demolition

By: Benjamin Nii Nai Anyetei

La Shikitele, Nii Adjei Koofeh IV, has denied any involvement in the demolition of structures at the Laboma Beach Resort, insisting that the exercise followed repeated directives to the resort’s management to stop developments within the buffer zone of the Kpeshie Lagoon.

The kingmaker made the clarification at a town hall meeting in La, where he rejected claims that he personally called for the demolition and was responsible for the destruction of businesses, investments and livelihoods at the site.

According to Nii Adjei Koofeh IV, the management of the resort had been warned by both the former and current Greater Accra Regional Ministers to halt construction activities in the area but allegedly failed to comply.

He said the evidence presented at the town hall meeting showed that he had no role in ordering or carrying out the demolition.

“They are saying, if you look at their letter, that I solely called for the destruction of Laboma and that I have destroyed businesses and investments and hurt families,” he said.

“But we can all attest to the fact what has been shown here, the evidence that has been adduced… attests to the fact that I have no hand in the demolition of Laboma.”

Nii Adjei Koofeh IV argued that the demolition was a consequence of the resort management’s alleged failure to comply with official directives.

He questioned why he should be blamed after authorities had repeatedly instructed the developers to stop construction.

“If you’ve shown this sort of gross disrespect and the law has caught up with you, why should you blame me for doing that?” he asked.

He also raised concerns over how businesses acquired land at the site, alleging that individuals who sold portions of the property to businesses did not have ownership rights over the land.

“The Laboma people do not own land. So if they’ve sold land that doesn’t belong to them to you, they’ve defrauded you,” he said.

He therefore urged businesses affected by the demolition, as well as others holding him responsible, to direct their concerns towards the individuals who allegedly facilitated the land transactions and developments.

“They should go after them and not me,” he said.

The comments come amid continuing concerns over the demolition of structures at the Laboma Beach Resort and its impact on businesses and investments at the site.
