Ayariga calls to protect Ghana’s strategic assets
In Ghana, All People’s Congress founder Hassan Ayariga has called for stronger protection of strategic national assets and broader Ghanaian participation in major investment agreements with foreign partners. MyJoyOnline reports.
Ayariga voiced this position in a Founders’ Day message dedicated to the legacy of Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah. In his view, the date should serve as an occasion to discuss strengthening state institutions, creating opportunities for citizens and protecting national interests during economic development.
Control over assets
Ayariga acknowledged that foreign direct investment can provide capital, technology and jobs. At the same time, he warned against agreements that, in his view, could give foreign investors excessive control over strategic national assets.
According to him, land, natural resources, enterprises and other important economic assets should be managed with the interests of future generations in mind. He also called for caution regarding the transfer of such assets to foreign investors through public-private partnerships.

Transparency and local business
The All People’s Congress founder advocated greater transparency in major public-private partnership agreements and transactions involving strategic national assets. According to him, such arrangements should be subject to parliamentary and public oversight.
Ayariga also proposed introducing requirements for meaningful Ghanaian participation in major investment projects, including commitments to create jobs, develop skills and transfer technology. Separately, he called for support for companies owned by Ghanaian citizens so they can compete and develop alongside international investors.
Ghana marks Founders’ Day and the birthday of Kwame Nkrumah on September 21. Nkrumah was born on September 21, 1909. The Ministry of the Interior declared the date a public holiday in 2026.
